Hey you come here,
Hey you come now.
Everybody gather around,
And behold,
A tale so old
Of Gods and Kings and woes
Of days so long ago,
Of a demon king, loved by all.
“Absurd”, The gods did loudly call.
So the jealous gods sent down their best
To put this demon king to the test.
A brahmin kid came down to meet:
Vishnu disguised as Vamana came to defeat
A demon king loved by the people
Cause he treated all as equals.
On the day of feast he came to the palace,
The one day Maveli cannot be callous.
For three feet of land he did ask.
The people thought there was a trick in his request.
But Maveli said he would grant it, alas!
And so Vamana started his conquest.
He grew so big, his foot covered the earth
And so he asked for his second foot of dirt,
The heavens were engulfed by the second foot
And so for the third Maveli said;
His foot on his head he could put.
The force of the foot forced Maveli down to hell
And trapped him in a fiery cell.
But the people on their knees did plead.
Vamana felt bad, so he took heed;
“Your king may return one day each year”
And on that special day,
When OUR king walks the earth again
We rejoice, for ONAM is here.
