THE GREAT FLOOD 2018 – DIYA SANGEETH

I stare ahead
My eyes full of fear
As the water rushes down the mountain side
I stay there, unable to move
My feet frozen to the spot
I watch as the line of water swallows everything in its path
Submerging houses, and cars, destroying cables and street lights
I watch the water destroy my house
The place I have lived my whole life
I watch water uprooting trees and drowning animals.
I stare as the echos of screams fill the streets
I stare as the cries of infants fill the air
I watch in hopelessness as bhundreds of people fall to a watery grave
But there was still hope for humanity
A spark of hope blooms in me
As I watch the people work together in harmony

The spark burst to bloom
Giving birth to a beautiful flower
The people worked together to help those in need.
They strove to help their brothers and sisters
Regardless of their religion, caste or creed.
Little did they know then that this was Nature’s way of reminding her children
Of what they have been fighting for.

Diya Sangeeth -The poet is just twelve years old and studying in the 7th standard. She started writing at a much younger age and quite a few poems have been born out of her pen.
