A Broken Smile – SUMATHI YASH

A tender ray of light
Falls on the crevasses.
The fragile vase
On the side stand,
That pretty face
Lights up.

In the happy sunshine
Her deep blue eyes
The fragile vase
On the side stand
A fake smile
She forces.

An innocent infant
Stands by her side
The fragile vase
On the side stand,
One shriek,
Two cries;

Who is to take the blame?
Who is to pay the price?
Now the sun shines
On an empty table
The forced smile
Shattered
Broken.

No one prepared her,
For the broken vase,
The cries of her infant,
For the broken pieces of herself,
No one prepared her,
for her new motherhood.
